I already have the furniture. I just want someone to come in and help pick paint colors and accessories. How much would that run on the low end. I don't care about designer stuff. I just want my home to look chic.
Any recommendations for Dallas/Fort Worth area?
Oh when I say 'home' I mean two bedroom/ one bath...lol. About 1000 square feet.

What are some good sites with photos of interiors decorated in vintage, shabby chic, junk market style, or country? I love the ideas magazine sites like Country Living etc have, but these get boring quickly as they don't update the galleries often.

I am in the process of designing and making some vintage inspired curtains and tiebacks and I need to purchase fabric. I need to know what colour curtains would you choose for your lounge and bedroom. My design will appeal to lovers of shabby chic and they will be pretty rather than grand. I dont want to go buy the wrong colour fabric and get off on the wrong foot! Thank you very much to all those who take the time to answer.

Antique Wood Furniture

Many homeowners are looking to find interesting and unique accents that serve to beautify their spaces. Antique wood furniture makes an excellent choice for savvy buyers who know quality and style when they see it. This kind of furnishing is also great for those of us who know little about antiquing at all.

There are many different forms of antique wood furniture to consider and there are some things to think about before making a purchase. One item may be ideal for one space while another will work well in a few choice settings. You also want to think about how much time and money you want to invest in a project.

You really don’t have to do much with many of the items that are available on the market. Many retailers offer great deals on different types of antique wood furniture. If you want a product that is ready for show, then there are definitely many options for you to consider.

Some people are a little crafty and they like the idea of purchasing antique wood furniture that needs some work. This is great, but you really need to think things through. Paint is one of the most cumbersome problems that a refinisher will face. After trying to remove paint from antique wood furniture you may find that there is good reason that painted items are considered ruined by some consumers.

The major problem is that the colored paint sets into the grains in the wood. This settled paint is nearly impossible to remove and you may find yourself stuck with a streaking, hopeless mess. One antique shop owner I know says that he will never buy antique wood furniture that has been painted.

Unless you are a very skilled refinisher or a glutton for punishment you may want to avoid buying antique wood furniture that has been painted. It is nearly impossible to restore a piece that has several layers of paint on it to its original condition.

Painting aside, there are other things to think about as well. Antique wood furniture comes in all different shapes and forms. You can find wonderful primitive pieces or elegant furnishings with intricate details. What you choose depends on your personal style as well as your budget.

Rustic décor isn’t necessarily cheap. I was surprised to discover that many of the primitive pieces were just as expensive as the polished antique wood furniture. No matter what you choose in this type of antiques, you are making a sound investment that promises to offer years of enjoyment.

How to make furniture have the Shabby Chic Look

For those that want to embark on their own project to create the shabby chic look there are some key things to remember.  First off.  Stick to a pastel colour scheme.  Dont use lots of different colours, but  choose 1 or at the most 2 soft colours. Pastel blue, pink, green and yellow are common colors as are whites and creams. If you are looking to do this as quick as possible, then a can of white spray paint will transform your item of furniture in a matter of hours.

Very popular with this style of furniture is aging it, or the "distressed" look. Here are a few simple steps to acheive this look.

  • Remove fixtures and fittings if possible, this should include parts that may be effected by water or paint.
  • Wash the item with soap and water.
  • Remove the "hardware" such as hinges, handles etc that have a modern look to them.
  • Carefully sand down the furniture in preparation for the first coat of paint.
  • This base coat should be in a contrasting colour to your top colour. IE if you are finishing the item in white, then it would be a good idea to use black or perhaps a light blue as the base coat.
  • All the first coat (the base coat) to completely dry and then lightly sand the furniture again to give the next coat a key
  • Paint the top colour now.  If the base coat is dark you will most likely need to apply two or three coats, but make sure you allow each coat to dry completely and then sand lightly.
  • Now comes the fun part! Aggressively sand small areas of the furniture like the corners.  Then sand small portions of the surfaces in order to expose small portions of the base color. This will give the furniture a distressed, worn look.
  • Finally replace the removed hardware (hinges handles etc) with glass versions or rusted versions.

If country living isn't your style, keep in mind that a well placed shabby chic item mixed into a contemporary or formal room can add an element of surprise and a welcoming feel to any home.
